Our History

Girls Model Secondary School Evwreni, Delta State, was founded by the government of the defunct Bendel State alongside four other Model Schools;
Girls Model Secondary School Ubiaja
Boys Model Secondary School, Patani
Boys Model Secondary School, Onicha Olona
Boys Model Secondary School, Ewonika
All of which are now in Edo and Delta States during the administration of Col. John Ewerekumoh Yeri as the state’s military administrator and Prof. Aghenta as the then Commissioner of Education opened doors on 19th April 1991 to sixty (60) female students who resumed on that day, the School was officially Commissioned on 29th April 1991 by the Governor’s representative who was the Commissioner Finance and Economic Planning.

These schools, among other things, provide quality education comparable to the Unity Schools and stand up to Federal government colleges nationwide in terms of standards of education and the quality of the students produced. To breed models who will be future leaders of Nigeria and foster unity among its students, staff, and community.

The history of Girls Model Secondary School Model Evwreni ties closely with the Teacher’s Training Colledge, which the government established in 1977 as part of the Universal Primary Education Programme. The Teacher training program spanned from 1977 – 1984 when the College was replaced with a Secondary School for Gifted Girls.
There have been a lot of changes over the years with the structure of the School; at some point, following the instruction of the State government, the School was divided into two sections: School 1 for Junior Secondary School (J.S.S.) and School 2 for Senior Secondary School (S.S.S.). Students, respectively.
However, this experiment was brought to an end by a policy issued by the Federal Government in 2012, merging the School back to its original structure.
At inception, the School boasted quality staff, standard structures like hostel facilities, staff quarters, classroom blocks, state of the art library, a sporting complex, a science laboratory, art studios, sporting equipment, a beautiful field for track and field events, a poultry farm, farm land for agricultural students to learn the basics of farming like (fish farming, digging ridges, and planting of cassava), an industrial kitchen and dining hall, an outdoor kitchen shed, a sick bay, music labs, assembly hall, administrative block etc.

It was and still is an entire boarding facility even though they experimented with having day students, making it mixed (for boys and girls), and even having school one and two at some point. It has now been returned to its original structure at inception – an all-girls boarding school.

The Model Schools were designed to be a departure from the crowded public schools of the time, providing enhanced qualitative education to every student of the School, which was confirmed by the WAEC results of its pioneer students and subsequent sets. Extracurricular activities like sports, drama, dancing, etcetera, also received a lot of attention. The students of this great School were second to none at Literary and Debating Society competitions and running relay racing competitions throughout the state and region.

Pioneered by Mrs Akhidenor of Blessed memory, her first Principal, the School took off on a good note. People from various parts of the country and beyond came to have a feel of this citadel of learning. Many have metamorphosed from babies to grown women and professionals in their respective fields of endeavour.

Girls Model Secondary School, Evwreni, has provided education for girls in Nigeria – creating equal gender opportunities for them to pursue education in professional fields like the Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Law, Architecture, the Arts, Social Sciences, and Education etc. Over the years, the School has turned out thousands of graduates, with a current population of 300 students, and a staff strength of well over 45 full-time teachers.

Sadly, the potential of this great School is yet to be fully harnessed by the government owing to neglect. This neglect is what birthed Girls Model Secondary School Evwreni, Old Girls Association of Nigeria (GMSSE)
